The first paradigm shift is to face the fact that DS is a disease – a neurodegenerative disease. Having extra chromosomal material is like having too much salt in a cake recipe. It never tastes right. DS people have a chemical imbalance, but other chemical imbalances are treated. Take depression – nobody thinks twice about people taking antidepressants. Or diabetes, it is logical to treat them with insulin. Think about Alzheimer’s disease. Would you deny your parent medication? Then why don’t we think medications can help DS? Well, we think and know they can.

Somehow, Down syndrome fell into the category of UNTREATABLE. Why? Every other disease expects a treatment.

This site has been organized by a group of parents with scientific backgrounds who for the past eight years have spent most of our free time combing through the latest Down syndrome research and technology publications. Our informal ‘think tank’ has put together research from all over the world. We hope this is the beginning of a very resourceful site. Researchers are doing a bang up job uncovering pieces of the DS puzzle but there is no formal organization collating the information. That’s where we come in! Our basic objective is to bring this mass of information forward in treatments that can be employed with presently available medication.

The trick has been to figure out specifically (and chemically) what was causing the symptoms. There was no way to unravel the underlying problems until recently. Then came the mouse! Yes, the thing that has supercharged DS research is the DS mouse model. About seven years ago a little mouse with Down syndrome was produced and he has been revealing all kinds of valuable information ever since.

This site has been set up to deliver the research and treatment information in both layman language and also presenting the underlying scientific articles.  We hope to add new information every month or so.

There is also a section with testimonials from people who have tried the suggested treatments. They present their experiences and personal evaluations of results. We believe this section will be of special interest to all our readers.

We hope this site will help many DS individuals. Use it as a resource. Unfortunately, your pediatrician probably has fewer than five DS patients and has no time to read the latest research. Feel free to share any and all information on this site with him.
